The time she was “that” Canadian

There are many Canadian stereotypes out there… we all love hockey, Tim Hortons is life, we are really nice people, we say “eh” in every sentence, and we have stronger beer and drink a lot.

We took a family vacation to Florida and the Bahamas in the winter quite a few years ago. We did the typical traveling around Florida and took our first starter cruise to the Bahamas from there.

My mom is not a drinker at all, my entire life I think I have seen her milk maybe one cooler an entire night. She is the type to sniff the bottle cap and fall over drunk, so I was surprised when we got on the cruise and she started drinking.

I was underage in the States (Canada they start us earlier on the liver damage), so we would order one virgin Pina Colada and one regular because they had all the booze sitting on the top of the drink and we could just dump some into the virgin drink. Maybe it was because it was our first cruise, maybe we weren’t ready for the ocean waves, or we got caught up in all the fun but we ended up drinking a lot, or at least feeling like we were.

The next morning we woke up in the Bahamas and we went on a jeep cruise around the island. We, along with many other people from all over the world, were following around a main tour guide in our own jeeps, making stops all over the place. We ended up on one of National Geo graphics most beautiful beaches that year and spent the afternoon there. My mom, the non-drinker, was hung over from the night before and it was made worse by the bumpy jeep ride. Picture this, she was laying on one of the worlds most beautiful beaches throwing up. An Australian couple , not realizing I was in ear shot, said “typical Canadian” before going to offer her some advil.

Funny story, eh?

Getting sick on vacation

I don’t mean the  drank too much kind of sickness..

Getting sick on vacation is the best thing in the world ! All the time you spend getting shots, taking medications, bringing medications, and then you get some weird sickness that you have never even heard of before ! Awesome, right!?

I have had my fair share of sickness on holidays from drinking too much and puking (on beaches so that’s paradise), eating too much and puking (I entered an eating contest, at least I won), horrible stomach cramps (probably because I did not want to hike that day… let’s be real), but NOTHING prepared me for this !!

No, this wasn’t an allergy. I know this because I was in a hospital in Thailand being treated for an allergy for many a days and hours. Nothing helped, it only got worse.

I spent the day on a motorcycle, cruising around the town and going to the beach. It was a super hot day out and I was loving it ! In the evening time we went for some drinks and played Uno on our porch. I felt like my forehead skin was a little tight, whenever I would raise my eyebrows it looked like I had a goose egg forehead. I did have a small sunburn, so I figured that must be it. I felt completely normal.

The next morning I wake up and look in the mirror to see this horror…. I looked like Quasi Modo. My forehead had swollen much larger, my one eye was swollen shut (yet I could still see fine… hmmmmm), and I basically look like I took on an entire Muay Thai fighting team and lived. Again, I felt completely normal ! I did not feel sick one bit ! I could breath fine, everything was all good. Wearing sunglasses you could not tell the horror that laid underneath. I went to the hospital and got an IV, I got allergy medications, I got this and that and cream and boom.. nothing worked. So I continued to grace the other tourists with my lovely face for the next 4 days cause I was there to party, not sit in my room.

After a few days my face started to go down and I never did get sick. I rode it out and nothing has happened since. During this time I was going through a super stressful time (my traveling partner had to go home for an emergency and I had never traveled alone before). After they left and I had a few days too cool down and realize it wasn’t all that bad was when my swollen face started to go down again. I think this was my bodies way of protecting me, making me look like a fool so I was safe… so no one would come near me.

Let’s just hope I never get this stressed out again.

Have you ever gotten sick on vacation?

That time we just dug a huge hole

Backpacking is funny… the things we do while traveling abroad may seem absolutely ridiculous to those back home.

We traveled to the Philippines with a group, expecting to relax and get to know everyone, have a great time.. Nothing surprised me more than one of our “activities” being to “dig a hole” in the sand… Uhm, is this for real !? Manual labour on my HOLIDAY!?

We had a blast..

We had 2 shovels, and at first everyone was like… is this for real? We just wanted to dig this hole and get it over with so we could go back to enjoying ourselves. After a while of taking turns digging (mostly the guys took this over), and getting the drinks flowing, we started to realize this was ALOT of fun!

There were the few that liked to sit in the shade.. throwing shade at those digging. The ones that just wanted to hit the beer bong and that was it. Then the ones that really carried the group and dug the entire hole for us to enjoy. By the end of the activity we were all friends, we had inside jokes, we had broken the drunk barrier, and we had spent the rest of the afternoon sitting in this giant hole on the beach laughing together.

Never write off any experience… it could be the time of your life.

Is it more fun in the Philippines ?
